Overview

Macular pigment (MP) refers to the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, which are concentrated in the central retina (macula). These pigments filter blue light and act as antioxidants, protecting photoreceptors from photooxidative damage. Low MP levels are associated with increased risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
