Overview

MAFA antisense RNA 1 (MAFA-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed in the antisense orientation relative to the MAFA gene[2][3]. It does not encode a protein. Studies indicate MAFA-AS1 can regulate gene expression epigenetically, potentially repressing or activating the expression of the MAFA gene, which may influence cellular differentiation programs[2]. In cancer biology, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), MAFA-AS1 has been identified as a prognostic marker associated with poor overall and disease-free survival[1]. Analyses suggest its involvement in tumorigenic progression, possibly through interactions with splicing regulators (such as SRSF1/SRSF9) and microRNAs (for example, miR210)[1]. As a lncRNA, MAFA-AS1 is not a traditional therapeutic target like a receptor or enzyme, but it may serve as a molecular biomarker or a potential future target for RNA-based intervention.
