Overview

Magnesium ammonium phosphate, widely known as struvite, is a crystalline mineral composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate hexahydrate. It is not a therapeutic target such as an enzyme or receptor; instead, it is a pathological byproduct of urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by urease-producing bacteria like Proteus, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas. These bacteria hydrolyze urea into ammonia, raising the urinary pH and promoting the precipitation of struvite crystals. If left untreated, these crystals can rapidly grow into large "staghorn" calculi that fill the renal pelvis, leading to significant morbidity, including obstructive uropathy, chronic pyelonephritis, and potentially fatal urosepsis. Therapeutic intervention typically focuses on surgical extraction of existing stones, eradication of the underlying bacterial infection with antibiotics, and the use of urease inhibitors like acetohydroxamic acid to prevent the recurrence of mineral formation.
