Overview

Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)₂. It is a white solid with low solubility in water and occurs naturally as the mineral brucite. Its aqueous suspension is known as milk of magnesia, a widely used antacid and laxative. Magnesium hydroxide is commonly used in pharmaceutical preparations to neutralize stomach acid and relieve indigestion, constipation, and heartburn. Industrially, it is used as a fire retardant, wastewater treatment agent, and food additive. While it is widely used in medicine, magnesium hydroxide itself is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, nor does it have a recognized role as a biomolecule in human signaling or disease pathways—it is a chemical agent with physicochemical actions.
