Overview

Magnesium ion channels are membrane proteins that selectively facilitate the transport of magnesium ions (Mg2+) across biological membranes. Mg2+ is the most abundant divalent cation within cells and is essential for numerous physiological processes, including acting as a structural element for ribosomes and membranes, serving as a cofactor for ATP-dependent enzymes, and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Key channel types include MgtE, CorA, and TRPM7. These channels regulate intracellular magnesium levels and play critical roles in cellular energy metabolism, protein synthesis, and signal transduction. Deficiency or dysfunction can lead to disorders affecting heart, muscle, bone, immune system, and nervous system function.
