Magnesium ion channels are membrane proteins that selectively facilitate the transport of magnesium ions (Mg2+) across biological membranes. Mg2+ is the most abundant divalent cation within cells and is essential for numerous physiological processes, including acting as a structural element for ribosomes and membranes, serving as a cofactor for ATP-dependent enzymes, and maintaining cellular homeostasis.
