Magnesium ion (Mg²⁺) homeostasis pathway proteins are a diverse group of membrane transporters, channels, exchangers, and intracellular binding proteins that collectively regulate the uptake, distribution, storage, and efflux of magnesium ions in cells. Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation after potassium and is essential for numerous cellular processes including enzyme activity regulation, nucleic acid stability, protein synthesis, metabolic cycles, and signaling pathways.
