Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancers, or contrast agents, are substances used to improve the visibility of internal body structures during MRI scans. These agents work by altering the magnetic properties of nearby water protons in tissues, thereby enhancing image contrast and allowing for better differentiation between normal and abnormal tissue. The most common types are gadolinium-based, but iron oxide and manganese-based agents are also used. They are not considered therapeutic targets themselves, but tools to improve diagnostic imaging.
