Overview

Magnetic resonance signal alteration refers to changes in the intensity or pattern of signals detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within tissues. These alterations are not a molecule or receptor themselves, but rather represent a radiological phenomenon that reflects underlying tissue characteristics, pathology, or physiological processes. Signal alterations can be intrinsic (due to tissue properties) or extrinsic (due to contrast agents). It's influenced by proton density and relaxation times (T1 and T2). Common patterns include muscle edema, fatty infiltration, and mass lesions. Contrast agents enhance detection sensitivity for certain pathologies. It is crucial for diagnosing a wide range of conditions including traumatic injuries, infections, autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, neoplasms, and neurologic/denervation syndromes.
