Magnetic resonance signal intensity

01

Overview

"Magnetic resonance signal intensity" refers to the relative brightness or darkness of tissues on MRI images, determined by physical factors such as proton density and the relaxation properties (T1, T2 times) of tissues exposed to magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses[1][6][7]. High or low signal intensity (hyperintensity or hypointensity) reflects underlying anatomy or pathology and depends on the imaging sequence as well as tissue properties—e.g., fat shows high intensity (bright) on T1-weighted images and relatively low (dark) on T2-weighted images, while fluids like water show the opposite[6][7]. Abnormal signal intensity patterns help radiologists identify and characterize disease processes, such as edema, hemorrhage, tumor, demyelination, or inflammation, but "signal intensity" itself is not a molecular target or biological entity[1][3][4]. In summary, "Magnetic resonance signal intensity" is an imaging and descriptive parameter, not a bona fide molecular or therapeutic target.
