The major capsid protein L1 of Human papillomavirus type 6 is the principal structural protein forming the viral capsid, assembling into 72 pentamers that create an icosahedral structure approximately 50 nm in diameter[5][6]. L1 is essential for viral infectivity; it mediates attachment to host cells and encapsidates the ~8 kb HPV genome[1][3]. Recombinant L1 can self-assemble into highly immunogenic virus-like particles, which underlie current prophylactic HPV vaccines[3].
