Overview

The major capsid protein L1 of human papillomavirus type 11 is a structural viral protein of approximately 55 kilodaltons that self-assembles into pentameric capsomers, further forming icosahedral virus-like particles (VLPs) resembling the native virion[1][3][4]. L1 mediates the initial attachment of the virus to host cells through interaction with glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfate on keratinocytes[3]. VLPs composed of recombinant L1 are highly immunogenic and form the basis for prophylactic HPV vaccines, eliciting neutralizing antibodies that prevent infection[1][3]. This protein is not itself oncogenic, but as a structural component of HPV11, it is essential for viral infectivity and a key antigenic target for immune intervention[1][4].
