Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Major capsid protein L1 of Human papillomavirus type 58 (HPV58) is the primary structural protein of the viral capsid and a key target for prophylactic vaccination (UniProt: P26538). HPV58 is classified as a high-risk human papillomavirus and is notably prevalent in East Asia, where it contributes significantly to the burden of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions (PubMed: 24903134). The L1 protein has the intrinsic ability to self-assemble into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) that retain the conformational epitopes of the native virus. These VLPs serve as the antigenic component in the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9), triggering the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies (FDA: Gardasil 9 Prescribing Information). These antibodies bind to the L1 protein on the surface of the virus, effectively blocking its ability to infect host basal epithelial cells and preventing the development of HPV-related malignancies (PubMed: 25693011). Prophylactic targeting of this protein is highly effective in preventing persistent infection and subsequent oncogenesis associated with this specific HPV genotype.
Induction of neutralizing antibodies that bind to the L1 protein, preventing viral attachment and entry into host cells (PubMed: 25693011).
