Major facilitator superfamily domain-containing protein 2B (MFSD2B) is a membrane transporter of the major facilitator superfamily, specifically responsible for the export of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive sphingolipid, from red blood cells and platelets into the plasma. This export function is crucial for maintaining proper sphingolipid metabolism, normal morphology of red blood cells, and platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. MFSD2B uniquely transports various molecular species of S1P and is distinct from SPNS2, another S1P transporter, both in sequence and tissue specificity. Disruption of MFSD2B leads to sphingolipid accumulation and impaired platelet function, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target for reducing platelet-dependent thrombotic risk.
