Major fimbrial subunit FimA is a critical surface protein of the keystone periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (UniProt P14756). It serves as the primary structural component of long fimbriae, which are essential for bacterial colonization, biofilm development, and adhesion to oral substrates and host cells (PubMed: 21502361). FimA facilitates entry into host cells by interacting with various receptors, including Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and integrins, thereby modulating the host immune response (PubMed: 15939751). Due to its pivotal role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and its association with systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's, FimA is a primary target for vaccine development and anti-adhesive therapeutic strategies (PubMed: 30356713).
