Overview
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a large genomic region encoding cell surface proteins essential for the adaptive immune system. MHC molecules, also known as human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in humans, present peptide antigens to T cells, mediating immune recognition and response. The MHC region is highly polymorphic, contributing to diverse pathogen recognition. It is critical for tissue transplantation compatibility and is implicated in susceptibility/resistance to autoimmune diseases.
