Overview
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I beta-2-microglobulin complex is a cell-surface protein assembly crucial for immune surveillance. It presents endogenous peptides to CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, enabling immune recognition of infected or transformed cells. It consists of a polymorphic heavy chain (alpha chain), the invariant light chain beta-2-microglobulin (β2m), and a bound peptide antigen. Dysregulation or deficiency can lead to immunodeficiency syndromes, and mutations are implicated in diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
