Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Major histocompatibility complex class II presenting Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 Tax peptides complex is a molecular assembly where fragments of the HTLV-1 Tax protein are displayed on the cell surface by MHC class II molecules (Source: PubMed: 11544300). The Tax protein is a 40 kDa phosphoprotein that acts as a potent transcriptional activator, essential for viral replication and the oncogenic transformation of T-cells (Source: UniProt: P03410). This complex is crucial for the activation of CD4+ T-helper cells, which coordinate the immune response against HTLV-1-infected cells. In diseases like HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), the interaction between this complex and CD4+ T cells is a key driver of neuroinflammation (Source: PubMed: 12874339). Therapeutically, this complex is targeted by investigational peptide-based and dendritic cell vaccines designed to elicit robust anti-Tax immunity in patients with Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) (Source: PubMed: 21734170). Additionally, TCR-like antibodies are being explored to specifically target these complexes for direct elimination of infected cells. This target represents a significant opportunity for precision immunotherapy in HTLV-1 related pathologies.
Stimulation of antigen-specific CD4+ T-lymphocytes to induce anti-viral or anti-tumor immune responses (Source: PubMed: 21734170).
