Overview

MAL2 antisense RNA 1 (MAL2-AS1) is a long noncoding antisense RNA gene annotated on the human genome. Like other antisense lncRNAs, it is transcribed from the strand opposite to its sense gene (in this case, MAL2), and is presumed to regulate gene expression through various mechanisms such as transcript interference, modulation of chromatin structure, or miRNA sponging[1][7]. Antisense RNAs may affect gene expression in *cis* (near their site of transcription) or in *trans* (at distant loci), often impacting the stability, translation, or transcription of their sense counterpart[1]. There are no reported diseases directly associated with MAL2-AS1, and it is not currently known as a therapeutic target or biomarker. Most information about its function and roles remains inferential, based on general mechanisms established for long noncoding antisense RNAs[1][6][7].
