Overview

Maladaptive thought patterns are persistent, negative, or irrational ways of thinking that contribute to emotional distress and unhealthy behaviors. These patterns often manifest as cognitive distortions—such as overgeneralization or black-and-white thinking—and are associated with a range of psychological conditions including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and social anxiety. They can lead to avoidance behaviors, impaired functioning in daily life, relationship difficulties, decreased self-esteem, and even physical health problems due to chronic stress. In clinical psychology—particularly in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)—maladaptive thoughts are considered targets for intervention but not molecular or biological therapeutic targets like receptors or enzymes. Instead of drugs acting on these "targets," psychotherapeutic techniques such as cognitive restructuring aim to help individuals identify and modify these dysfunctional thoughts into more adaptive ones. While maladaptive thought patterns play a central role in the development and maintenance of many mental health conditions—and thus represent an important focus for treatment—they do not correspond to a discrete molecule or receptor within the body.[1][2][3][5] Therefore: Maladaptive thought patterns are not a molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme; rather they describe dysfunctional cognitive processes addressed through psychotherapy rather than pharmacology.[1][2]
