Overview
Malassezia is a genus of lipid-dependent yeasts that are part of the normal skin flora in humans and animals. While generally commensal, certain conditions can allow overgrowth leading to various skin diseases. The genus includes at least 16 recognized species, with most being lipid-dependent for growth except for M. pachydermatis.
