“Malignant or virally infected cell” is not a canonical molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but instead describes a broad class of abnormal cells. Malignant cells are those that have undergone transformation resulting in unregulated growth and tumor formation, associated with cancers such as carcinomas, lymphomas, or sarcomas. Virally infected cells refer to any host cell harboring an active or latent viral infection, including but not limited to cells infected by oncogenic viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), or Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1)[1][2][3][6]. These cells may serve as indirect “targets” for immunotherapies or antiviral strategies, but the entry does not correspond to a singular molecular entity or a specific protein target. Instead, these cells may express various targetable surface markers, viral antigens, or immunomodulatory proteins (such as PD-L1) depending on context[7]. The molecular changes seen in malignant or virus-infected cells include enhanced proliferation, escape from immune surveillance, altered metabolism, resistance to cell death, and in the case of viral infection, expression of viral proteins that disrupt cellular control mechanisms[4][5][6]. This entry is too generic to represent a defined molecular target and thus is not considered a canonical drug target.
