Overview

MALL pseudogene 1 (MALLP1) represents a non-functional, processed pseudogene derived from the parental MALL (MAL-like) gene, which is part of the MAL family of integral membrane proteins. Pseudogenes result from mutations, frame shifts, or retrotransposition events that disable their protein-coding ability. Most pseudogenes, including MALLP1, do not encode translatable or functional proteins and are not recognized as therapeutic targets. While some pseudogenes have regulatory roles at the RNA level (such as acting as microRNA sponges or modulators of their parental gene’s expression), there is no evidence that MALLP1 is functionally relevant or druggable. MALLP1 is generally excluded from therapeutic target databases and is not used as a biomarker or clinical target. The MALL protein itself is an integral membrane protein and part of the MARVEL domain-containing superfamily. However, MALLP1 specifically designates an inactive, non-coding pseudogene. Some pseudogenes in general can modulate gene expression or miRNA pathways, but these effects are highly context-dependent and as yet undocumented for MALL pseudogene 1. There are no known drugs, mechanisms of action, or safety concerns related to MALLP1. MALLP1 should not be confused with the functional “MAL-like protein” or other true protein-coding gene family members.
