Malodorous compounds represent a broad category of volatile molecules that elicit an unpleasant olfactory response, primarily serving as metabolic byproducts of microbial activity. In human health, these compounds—most notably volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) like hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, as well as amines like trimethylamine—are the underlying causes of conditions such as halitosis (bad breath) and bromhidrosis (body odor). They are typically produced by anaerobic bacteria residing in the oral cavity or on the skin through the degradation of proteinaceous substrates, such as sulfur-containing amino acids. While these compounds are not biological targets in the traditional pharmacological sense (i.e., they are not proteins, receptors, or enzymes), they are the focal points of various therapeutic and hygienic interventions. Such treatments aim to neutralize these molecules chemically or inhibit their formation by targeting the causative microflora. For example, metal salts like zinc are used to sequester VSCs into non-volatile precipitates, while antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine reduce the bacterial populations responsible for their synthesis. Research has also identified specific host receptors, such as Trace-amine-associated receptor 5 (TAAR5), which detect these compounds and mediate the perception of malodor.
