Overview

MALRD1 antisense RNA 1 (MALRD1-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA generated from the antisense strand at the MALRD1 gene locus. It is classified as a natural antisense transcript and is presumed to regulate, potentially in cis or trans, the expression and processing of its associated sense transcript, MALRD1. While many antisense lncRNAs are known to control chromatin structure, RNA maturation, and gene stability, the specific biological roles and disease associations of MALRD1-AS1 are currently largely unknown. It is not considered a classical therapeutic target since it does not encode a protein or function as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter under current knowledge. If more functional studies emerge, or if its role in disease becomes more clear, these classifications should be updated accordingly.
