Maltase-glucoamylase (MGAM) is a membrane-bound alpha-glucosidase enzyme located in the brush border of the small intestine. It plays a critical role in the final steps of dietary starch digestion, hydrolyzing linear regions of starch and maltose into glucose for absorption. MGAM works synergistically with other enzymes such as sucrase-isomaltase and alpha-amylase to ensure efficient breakdown of complex carbohydrates. Inhibitors targeting MGAM—such as miglitol—are used therapeutically for managing postprandial blood glucose levels.
