Manganese cation (Mn²⁺)

Target
Mn²⁺
Molecular classification
Inorganic ion, Metal cation, Enzyme cofactor
01

Overview

The manganese cation, Mn²⁺ (manganese(II) or manganous ion), is a divalent metal ion essential for various biological processes. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in metabolism, antioxidant defense, bone formation, reproduction, and immune response. It is also used as a paramagnetic contrast agent for MRI. While essential, high concentrations can be toxic due to interference with other metal-dependent processes.
