Mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease 3 (MASP-3) is a serine protease involved in the lectin and alternative pathways of the complement system. It activates complement factor D, which is crucial for initiating and amplifying the alternative pathway. MASP-3 also plays a role in embryonic development and can inhibit MASP-2 function within MBL-MASP complexes. Mutations in MASP-3 are associated with 3MC syndrome, a rare congenital disorder characterized by craniofacial abnormalities and intellectual disability.
Inhibition of MASP-3 activity could potentially modulate the alternative pathway of the complement system.
