Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), encoded by the MBL2 gene, is a key component of the innate immune system. It functions as a pattern recognition receptor, binding to specific carbohydrate structures on pathogens and initiating the lectin pathway of complement activation. This leads to opsonization, phagocytosis, and inflammation, ultimately contributing to pathogen clearance. Deficiency in MBL increases susceptibility to infections, particularly in early childhood.
