Overview

MAP9 antisense RNA 1 (MAP9-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the MAP9 gene, located on chromosome 4 (155,173,525-155,381,694 on the forward strand)[7][1]. Antisense lncRNAs such as MAP9-AS1 are typically involved in regulating the expression of their neighboring “sense” genes—the process can involve mechanisms like chromatin modification, recruitment of epigenetic regulators, or modulation of mRNA stability[2][4][6]. While other antisense lncRNAs have documented involvement in cancer, inflammation, and cell proliferation, there is currently no published experimental evidence regarding the biological function or disease association specific to MAP9-AS1. MAP9-AS1 is not a protein, receptor, enzyme, or conventional drug target; rather, it is a regulatory RNA, and thus, is not considered a therapeutic target itself[1][7]. Antisense lncRNAs as a group are subjects of ongoing research for potential roles as biomarkers and therapeutic targets, but MAP9-AS1 specific roles and applications remain uncharacterized as of current data[2][6][9].
