Marburg marburgvirus Glycoprotein (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Viral surface glycoprotein, Type I transmembrane protein
01

Overview

The Marburg marburgvirus glycoprotein (GP) is the sole surface protein of the virus and plays a central role in viral attachment, entry, and fusion with host cells. It is a type I transmembrane protein that forms homotrimeric spikes on the viral envelope. The GP gene is encoded by the fourth gene in the Marburg virus genome. It mediates recognition of cellular receptors—primarily Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1)—and facilitates entry into target cells through endocytosis followed by membrane fusion. As it is exposed on virion surfaces during infection, it serves as a major target for neutralizing antibodies.
