Overview

The MAS receptor (MAS1) is a G protein-coupled receptor and a key component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). It is primarily activated by angiotensin-(1–7), leading to vasodilation, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and anti-thrombotic effects. The MAS receptor acts as a counter-regulatory component within the RAS, opposing the actions of angiotensin II. Its broad tissue distribution suggests additional functions beyond blood pressure control, potentially including roles in behavior or metabolism.

Mechanism of action

Agonists activate the MAS receptor, leading to downstream signaling via Gαq, Gαi/s, and Gα12 proteins. This results in increased intracellular calcium, modulation of cAMP levels, and cytoskeletal rearrangement.
