Overview

Mast cells and basophils are specialized granulocytes of the immune system that serve as key effectors in allergic and inflammatory responses (StatPearls, NBK470577). Mast cells are primarily tissue-resident, found in high concentrations at mucosal surfaces and the skin, while basophils are the least common granulocyte circulating in the blood (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2008). Both cell types express the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI), which, when cross-linked by IgE-antigen complexes, triggers the release of preformed inflammatory mediators such as histamine, proteases, and heparin through a process called degranulation (JACI, 2015). This activation also leads to the synthesis of lipid mediators like leukotrienes and various pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to the pathophysiology of asthma, anaphylaxis, and chronic urticaria (}
