Mast cell activation refers to the process by which mast cells release chemical mediators in response to various stimuli. This process is central both to normal immune defense and pathological conditions such as allergies and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). Activation can occur via IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated pathways, leading to the release of histamine, tryptase, cytokines, and other mediators that contribute to inflammation and allergic symptoms. Excessive or inappropriate activation leads to a spectrum of localized or systemic effects. Key receptors involved include FcεRI and KIT/CD117.
Mast cell activation is a complex process involving multiple pathways, including IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated mechanisms. Therapeutic strategies aim to block these pathways or counteract the effects of released mediators.
