Overview

Matrilin-4 (MATN4) is a protein encoded by the MATN4 gene and is a major component of the extracellular matrix, especially in cartilage[3][6]. It is part of the von Willebrand factor A domain–containing protein family, which plays a role in forming filamentous networks that provide structural support to tissues such as cartilage and cornea[2][3][6]. Matrilin-4 is implicated in extracellular matrix organization, cartilage matrix formation, and tissue regeneration, including potential roles in corneal dystrophies and wound healing[2][3]. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, but there is currently no evidence that MATN4 is a therapeutic target for approved drugs or that it acts as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter in pharmacological contexts[2][3][6].
