The Matrix 2 (M2) ion channel protein is an integral membrane protein found in influenza A virus and is essential for the virus's life cycle. It functions as a proton-selective ion channel, playing critical roles during viral entry, uncoating, assembly, and release. The functional channel is formed by four M2 monomers assembling together. The antiviral drug amantadine specifically inhibits influenza A virus M2 ion channel activity; resistance to amantadine arises from mutations within the TM domain.
