Matrix metalloprotease 1 (MMP-1), also known as interstitial collagenase or fibroblast collagenase, is a member of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) family. These are zinc-dependent endopeptidases primarily responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, especially collagens. MMP-1 degrades interstitial collagens types I, II, and III by cleaving their triple helical domains. This function is crucial for normal physiological processes such as tissue remodeling, wound healing and bone development. Dysregulation leads to pathological conditions including arthritis, atherosclerosis, and tumor invasion/metastasis. MMP‑1 can act as an activator of G protein-coupled protease activated receptor‑1 (PAR‑1), contributing to oncogenesis and metastasis in various cancers. In platelets, activated MMP‑1 regulates thrombotic events.
