Matrix metallopeptidase 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000225678) is a sequence in the genome that resembles the functional MMP1 gene but lacks the ability to code for an active enzyme. Pseudogenes such as this one arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically accumulate mutations that render them nonfunctional. The functional matrix metallopeptidase 1 protein (MMP1) is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix, tissue remodeling, and several physiological and pathological processes.
