Matrix metallopeptidase 23A (MMP23A) is the partially duplicated, centromeric pseudogene of MMP23B in humans. It is part of the matrix metalloproteinase family, enzymes involved in extracellular matrix degradation, but the MMP23A locus does not encode a functional protein in humans. In other mammals, related active homologs have been described within the broader MMP family, which regulate diverse physiological processes including tissue remodeling, cell migration, and responses to injury or inflammation. Human MMP23A is not considered a receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target as it lacks protein-coding function.
