Matrix metalloproteinase-15 (MMP15) is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family, a group of zinc-dependent endopeptidases responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix components. MMP15 is classified as a membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) situated at the cell surface as a type I transmembrane protein. It participates in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, and is involved in pathological states including cancer and arthritis. By degrading ECM and activating other proteases such as progelatinase A (MMP2), MMP15 contributes to cancer progression, metastasis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). It is recognized as a drug target, particularly in oncology, with investigational inhibitors such as marimastat developed to block its activity. MMP15 expression levels can serve as biomarkers for prognosis in several cancer types.
