Matrix metalloproteinase 20 (MMP20), also known as enamelysin, is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family and is essential for normal tooth development. It primarily functions to cleave proteins like amelogenin and ameloblastin during enamel formation. Mutations in the MMP20 gene cause amelogenesis imperfecta.
