Matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7), also known as matrilysin, is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. It plays a role in tissue remodeling, embryonic development, and wound healing, as well as in pathological conditions like cancer metastasis and fibrosis. MMP7 degrades various ECM proteins and can activate other pro-MMPs. Overexpression is associated with tumor malignancy, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions.
