Overview

Matrix remodeling associated 7 (MXRA7) is a protein encoded by the MXRA7 gene located on chromosome 17 (17q25.1) in humans. It is part of the Matrix Remodeling Associated (MXRA) gene family, which is involved in regulation of cell adhesion and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. MXRA7 has a molecular weight of approximately 22 kDa and is expressed in various tissues, often localizing to the cellular matrix. Functional studies show roles in bone formation (osteogenesis), inflammation modulation, and tissue repair. In mouse models, MXRA7 deficiency impairs osteogenesis and exacerbates inflammatory injury or psoriasis, suggesting regulatory functions in these processes. Emerging evidence associates MXRA7 with cancer, notably in hematological malignancies where it can promote proliferation and chemoresistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or inhibit apoptosis in acute myeloid leukemia, highlighting its potential for targeted intervention. While MXRA7 is not a classical receptor or enzyme, its involvement in ECM dynamics and disease processes establishes it as a promising, though not yet fully characterized, therapeutic target.
