Mature dendritic cells are central orchestrators in anti-tumor immunity due to their unique capacity for efficient processing and presentation of tumor-associated antigens—especially through cross-presentation pathways—to activate both helper and cytotoxic arms of adaptive immunity. Their function is critical not only under physiological conditions but also as a therapeutic target/intervention point within cancer immunotherapy strategies such as personalized vaccines using autologous matured/pulsed dendritic cells.
Mature DCs present tumor-associated antigens via MHC class I and II molecules to activate CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, respectively, leading to tumor cell lysis and immune response amplification. They also secrete cytokines to modulate the immune microenvironment.
