Maxi-K Channel Alpha Subunit (BK Channel Alpha Subunit)

Target
BK Channel Alpha Subunit
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Potassium channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Calcium-activated potassium channel
01

Overview

The BK (Big Potassium) channel alpha subunit, encoded by the KCNMA1 gene, forms a homotetrameric, large-conductance, voltage and calcium-activated potassium channel. It regulates smooth muscle tone, neuronal excitability, and neurotransmitter release by conducting potassium ions out of the cell upon activation by membrane depolarization and intracellular calcium increase. Dysfunction is implicated in hypertension and neurological disorders, making it a therapeutic target.
