Overview

Maxillary molars are the multi-cusped teeth located in the posterior region of the upper jaw, primarily responsible for the mechanical breakdown of food through grinding and crushing (StatPearls, Anatomy, Head and Neck, Maxillary Molars). In the permanent dentition, there are three maxillary molars per quadrant: the first, second, and third molars, with the latter often referred to as wisdom teeth (Wikipedia, Maxillary molar). These teeth are anatomically complex, typically featuring three roots and a large occlusal surface area, and their roots are often in close proximity to the maxillary sinus (StatPearls, Anatomy, Head and Neck, Maxillary Molars). While essential for proper digestion and maintaining the integrity of the dental arch, they are frequently affected by bacterial biofilms leading to caries and periodontal infections (NIH, Dental Caries). From a drug development perspective, maxillary molars are not therapeutic molecular targets; instead, they are anatomical sites for local drug delivery, such as fluoride treatments or local anesthesia during dental procedures.
