Mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease 2 (MASP-2) is a serine protease enzyme encoded by the *MASP2* gene. It plays a crucial role in the lectin pathway of complement activation, initiating the cascade upon binding of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) or ficolins to pathogens or damaged cells. MASP-2 cleaves complement components C4 and C2, leading to the formation of C3 convertase and subsequent complement activation. It also has a role in coagulation by cleaving prothrombin. Targeting MASP-2 is being explored as a therapeutic strategy in diseases involving dysregulated complement activation.
