MCHR2 antisense RNA 1 (MCHR2-AS1)

Target
MCHR2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

MCHR2 Antisense RNA 1 (MCHR2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed anti-sense to the Melanin-concentrating hormone receptor 2 (MCHR2). It shares a promoter region with MCHR2, and genetic polymorphisms in this locus are associated with variation in body mass index, particularly in patients treated with psychotropic agents, and may play a role in psychiatric disorders such as atypical depression[2][4]. MCHR2-AS1’s molecular function is largely unknown but is hypothesized to influence gene expression of MCHR2 via epigenetic or transcriptional modulation. No direct drugs or clinical safety concerns are reported for this entity, and its primary research relevance lies in human genetics and disease association studies[2][4].

Biological functions

Epigenetic regulation (suggested by analogy to other antisense lncRNAs, e.g., APOA1-AS1)Possible regulation of MCHR2 receptor expression via promoter activity
03

Disease associations

Obesity (implicated in genetic association studies, especially when coupled with MCHR2 polymorphisms impacting body mass index)Psychiatric disease, including atypical depression (modulates BMI during psychotropic drug treatment)
04

Biomarkers

Certain SNPs (e.g. rs7754794, rs6925272) in the MCHR2/MCHR2-AS1 region have been investigated as patient selection markers for BMI-associated phenotypes and atypical depression under psychotropic medication
