Measles morbillivirus and Rubella virus are two distinct human viral pathogens that are frequently addressed together in clinical practice due to their inclusion in the trivalent MMR vaccine. Measles virus is a highly contagious member of the Paramyxoviridae family that causes a systemic infection characterized by high fever, cough, and a maculopapular rash, potentially leading to severe complications like pneumonia or encephalitis (StatPearls, 2023). Rubella virus, belonging to the Matonaviridae family, typically causes a milder febrile illness but is a significant teratogen, capable of causing Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) if contracted during pregnancy (CDC, 2020). While both viruses are primarily targeted through preventative live-attenuated vaccines that elicit robust humoral and cellular immunity, they differ significantly in their molecular structure and replication cycles (PubMed, 2021). Measles utilizes CD150 (SLAM) and Nectin-4 as cellular receptors for entry, whereas Rubella enters cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis, often involving the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein in neural tissues (UniProt, 2024). There are currently no specific, highly effective antiviral therapies for either virus, making vaccination the cornerstone of public health efforts to eliminate these diseases (NIH, 2023).
Prevention via induction of active immunity (neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses) through live-attenuated viral strains; Vitamin A modulates immune response and maintains epithelial integrity during measles infection; Immune globulin provides passive immunity for post-exposure prophylaxis.
