Overview

Measles, mumps, and rubella virus antigens collectively refers to the critical surface proteins of three distinct viruses—measles (hemagglutinin [H] and fusion [F] proteins), mumps (fusion protein [F] and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase [HN]), and rubella (envelope glycoprotein E1)—that serve as chief immunogens driving protective responses following infection or vaccination. These antigens mediate viral entry by binding to cellular receptors and fusing viral and host membranes, and are targeted by neutralizing antibodies in both natural immunity and immunization strategies. While grouped in the context of the MMR vaccine or combined serological testing, they are structurally and functionally distinct and should be considered individually in molecular and pharmacological studies.
