A mechanical barrier for hemostasis refers to materials or agents (such as gelatin, collagen, cellulose, or polysaccharide-based sponges or powders) that physically obstruct bleeding by swelling and absorbing blood at the injury site. These agents provide a scaffold for platelets to adhere and aggregate, accelerating clot formation and stabilizing it, but do not act through specific biological receptors or enzyme pathways. Mechanical hemostats are widely used in trauma care and surgery for rapid blood loss control, but do not target or modulate a defined molecular entity.
